Investment Strategy - Quotes

Dear Readers,

Last two weeks of market fall has given good learning and investment opportunity. Diamond and dust belong to same soil but their ability to resist the heat and pressure makes huge difference in their valuation. It was tough testing time for new investors and market fall has shattered not only the price of good stocks but also confidence level of investors. It is time to refresh with experience of legend investor Warren Buffett, who has characteristics like diamond and defeated several similar situations for decades.

Buffett explains, “To be fearful when others are greedy and to be greedy only when others are fearful.”

"The basic ideas of investing are to look at stocks as businesses, use market fluctuations to your advantage, and seek a margin of safety. That’s what Ben Graham taught us. A hundred years from now they will still be the cornerstones of investing."

There is no hidden secret of investing except below

 Golden Rules

1. Concentrate your investments in good companies run by strong management.
2. Limit yourself to the number of companies you can truly understand.
3. Pick the very best companies, and put the bulk of your investment there.
4. Think long-term.
5. Volatility happens, carry on with all situations.

"Buy business, not stocks, the businesses that willing to own forever. The business which is simple and easy to understand. All you do is buy shares in a great business for less than the business is intrinsically worth and priced attractively relative to their future prospects, with management of the highest integrity and ability. Then you own those shares forever."

"It’s far better to buy a wonderful company at a fair price than a fair company at a wonderful price.

"I want to be in businesses so good even a dummy can make money."

"Look for the durability of the franchise. The most important thing to me is figuring out how big a moat there is around the business. What I love, of course, is a big castle and a big moat with piranhas and crocodiles."

"In evaluating people, you look for three qualities: integrity, intelligence, and energy. If you don’t have the first, the other two will kill you."

"Great investment opportunities come around when excellent companies are surrounded by unusual circumstances that cause the stock to be mis-appraised."

"Success in investing doesn’t correlate with IQ. Once you have ordinary intelligence, what you need is the temperament to control the urges that get other people into trouble in investing."

"We don’t have to be smarter than the rest, we have to be more disciplined than the rest."

When to Buy

When the stock market forces the price of a good business downward.
When a specific risk temporarily punishes a business.
When investor indifference allows a superior business available at half of its intrinsic value

What to Buy

• Is the business simple and understandable, with a consistent operating history and favorable long-term prospects?
• Is it run by honest and competent managers, who allocate capital rationally, communicate candidly with shareholders, and resist the institutional imperative?
• Are the company’s economics in good shape with profit margins, owners’ earnings, and increased market value that matches retained earnings?
• Is it available at a discount to its intrinsic value?

"Investing is not that complicated. You need to know accounting, the language of business. You need the right mind-set, the right temperament. You should be interested in the process and be in your circle of competence."

Above quotes of Warren Buffett explains complete philosophy of stock market investment. Only need to evaluate our stand and situation with above. It is never too late to realign now.

I came to the psychology of misjudgment almost against my will, I rejected it until I realized my attitude was costing me a lot of money. - C. Munger

  3. Great read mam! one question though.. "strong management - honest and competent managers" it sounds easy but how do we know when a good/strong management turns bad. How to avoid a good management company before it starts mismanaging the company. Dont you think govt/sebi should get in place some stringent rules which make the management think its not worth to adapt to wrong practices because the punishment is a lot more severe than the benefits of mismanagement? Today there might be rules but if the fruits of mismanagement are more rewarding than the punishment, it is always tempting for some managements to go for it. Please advise mam...

  9. Good investment guidelines and thank you for educating the investors through those guidelines. In fact I am having good confidence in market future and I do hold them for decades. I believe stocks we buy are like my children I will feed them i.e. hold and accumulate them until one fine day they provide good returns to me as the son to whome we provide good education helps us in our old age. So I take every opportunity to accumulate and sell them at every crashes and rallies. Niceday to all of you.

  13. Very good article Madam, It always reminds us that we need to invest in business but not in markets. Last 2-3 weeks many people were posting that markets were falling what should we do. Its good if we feel that we invested in business not in markets then I feel that we don't panic though the markets fall. Good business will always preform and these market fluctuations are temporary and very good opportunity to pick good business stocks at very cheap value. Thanks for always guiding us Mam in right path and always giving us very good business stocks.

Mam also my request is to not postpone next month stock and request you for an infrastructure stock. I feel this is right time as many good stocks are at dead cheap and if we postpone 1 month, all those good stocks will go back up to their actual price. Also punters(traders) won't be that much active in these markets and our blog members will get maximum chance to enter at lower levels. As almost all blog readers are long term investors these market fluctuations won't be an issue and who don't want to take risk can wait till markets stabilizes. We will be always with ur decision Mam.

    Thank you Mam.

  40. The government today approved a `viability gap funding` (VGF) of Rs 5,050 crore for setting up over 5,000 MW of grid linked solar power projects under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission. "The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs has given its approval for setting up over 5,000 MW of Grid-Connected Solar PV Power Projects on build, own and operate basis," an official statement said. After the meeting, Power Minister Piyush Goyal said, "To push solar energy programme, a scheme to provide Rs 5,050 crore VGF for setting up 5,000 MW capacity has been approved." Elaborating further the minister said, "The VGF will be provided through reverse bidding. Whosoever will quote the lowest VGF will win. One part of these funds will be for domestic modules. These companies will be given Rs 1.25 crore per MW and those coming through international competitive bidding will get Rs one crore per MW)." Goyal expressed hope that the VGF reverse bidding auction will help in reducing the power tariff in future.According to the statement, it will be implemented by Solar Power Developers (SPDs) with VGF under Batch-lV of Phase-ll of the JNNSM. The total investments expected under this scheme is about Rs 30,000 crore. It said that the estimated requirement of funds to provide VGF for 5,000 MW capacity solar projects is estimated to be Rs 5,050 crore (Rs 1 crore/MW).This includes handling charges to Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) at the rate of 1 percent of the total grant disposed and Rs 500 crore for payment security mechanism for all three VGF schemes of 750 MW, 2000 MW and 5000 MW. The upper limit for VGF will be Rs 1 crore per MW. In case there is savings in the total VGF requirement, quantum of capacity of 5000 MW can be enhanced, it said.Under the scheme 500 MW capacity will be created this fiscal while during four financial year from 2016-17 to 2019-20, solar power generation capacity of 1,125 each year will be set up. The scheme will be implemented on build, own and operate basis through competitive bidding to provide solar power at a pre-defined tariff of Rs 4.93 per kWh (unit) for first year. The Scheme will be implemented by SECI as per Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) Guidelines.SECI shall prepare necessary bidding documents for inviting the proposals for setting up of projects on a competitive bidding through e-bidding. SECI will enter into Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with the selected developers and the Power Sale Agreement (PSA) with the buying entities. Requisite funds for provision of the VGF support will be made available to MNRE from the National Clean Energy Fund (NCEF), operated by Ministry of Finance.Out of 5,000 MW, some capacity in each tranche, will be developed with mandatory condition of solar PV cells and Modules made in India. This will be called the Domestic Content Requirement (DCR) category and remaining will be in open category.

    Surana Solar:
    1. Govt. is giving encouragement to solar sector and future belongs to solar sector as you mentioned

Good Morning and thanks a lot for the Investment Strategy Quotes.

    I hold 100 Coal India @ 390 for last 2 yrs. CMP is 305.

Shall I hold Coal India or can I swap it with Donear, DTIL or with new recommendation. Coal India has a good Dividend Yield of approx 7 % but no Capital appreciation. Thanks and warm rgds.

  70. Mam, I have bought surana @38. It seems like in short term it will take a while to reach to my buy price. On the other hand i am empty with cash to invest in your new recommendation.

Is it ok to switch investment in surana for new recommendation for now and then by back surana with at least profit from new recommendation? Pls advice, thanks in advance.

    1. Hi,

Its a basic mistake in portfolio management, which ppl commit. when surana will go up nobody knows. uptrend can even start before the results. And By then you will book a loss here and later regret and will buy again at higher price. Its okay to skip a new opportunity if you dont have money but this kind of strategy will not help you to make money. If you have conviction on a stock. Hold it.

      Regards,
      Vinay

  82. Hi dolly, recently waterbase released their statement in bse stating initial damages assessed by the management is said to be 19 crores. ..and we are yet to see operational losses of December quarters due to floods..also company headquarters had stopped functioning till recently..This means we will have a q3 with loss and a muted q4..
If the insurance company does not pay the said amount of 19 crores and assuming waterbase may incur a operational loss of 5 crores in q3 quarters...can it bounce back...Wat is the price at which we can enter it with some margin of safety....is it still safe taking positions in the company...had accumulated good number of shares... looking to average it further if price goes down...company looks good with no debt.. recently settled of one time debt with a bank..
But is the company strong enough to bounce back?

    1. Q1 will best the quarter any fall due to above factors will be good opportunity to add more. Company has initiated the insurance claim for flood related damages.
