Investment Rationale

Bearings find its applications in almost every industry, machines and domestic equipments. The global bearing market is gaining more importance owing to rising utilization of bearing products in various end-use industries. Technological developments in bearing sector have improved the overall efficiency  and enhanced the shelf life of the machines and equipments.

The Indian bearings market size is expected to grow @ 8 -10 % CAGR between 2022 and 2027. The rapid adoption of electric vehicles  ( EVs)  and growth in old vehicle population are the primarily  growth driver for bearings in automobile sector.  Similarly  rapid adoption of automation and robotics  are the major  demand driver in industrial sector. There will be opportunity to develop high-quality bearings in terms of tolerance and heat management for high-speed EVs.

The bearings are key deciding factors for the smooth operation, reliability, long life cycle and success of any  machinery / equipment because bearing failure can cause major damage to any machine / equipment. Indian bearing market is mainly dominated by few foreign MNCs like SKF, NSK, Schaeffler (FAG) and Timken. There are only few Indian origin companies are having technology and expertise to manufacture high quality bearings to compete with these foreign MNCs.

SNL Bearings is small but benchmark player in the bearing industry. NRB Bearings along with SNL Bearings commands ~70% market share in organised needle roller bearing market, which implies low competition for the company. This is on account of close OEM relationships and customised product offerings with strong engineering capabilities of its R&D team.

The SNL has access to world-class technology through its parent company NRB Bearing Ltd. SNL has also capabilities to manufacture its own special purpose machines required for bearing manufacturing.

Apart from automobile sector, the increasing demand from various applications like office automation, surveillance and security equipments, industrial robots, medical equipment, audio-visual equipment and machine tools has resulted in the adoption of precision  and miniature bearings.

Conclusion

SNL is a niche player in bearing industry. The company has a strong set of financials and fundamentals. Its association with NRB Bearing gives access to advanced technology and vast client base in India and across the world. SNL Bearing stock at cmp 265 is giving excellent investment opportunity for  short term to long term ( 1 year to 5 years ). It can be bought + / - 15% from cmp with 10 % allocation.

      1. SNL has one of the best technology for Needle Bearing manufacturing.
      2. SNL is one of the most cost-effective bearing manufacturer.
      3. Profit margins are best in the industry.

Can you please give your inputs on Daiichi results. They have posted a loss again. However top line has been increasing gradually.

Would you be able to help us understand what the other expenses are, because they seem to be cropping up every quarter..

    1. Yes results are still below expectation but very near to make turnaround in next few quarters.

Raw material cost and other expenses are high. It is due to repairs and maintenance of fire affected plant. The company has not received yet insurance claim losses from fire. All these issues will settle down within next few quarters.

    1. Company is posting good results. Hopefully there will be enough seller. SNL has reduced the Share Capital from 13.61 crores to 3.61 crores in last 10 years due to the payment of preference shares to NRB. Company become debt-free and started paying good dividend from 2016.

Low equity base is very positive for good profit generating companies. EPS will move-up significantly with increase in profit and stock price will follow it, higher dividend yield on investment, higher chances of bonus or stock split.

    1. In Indian equity market IT and finance sector have maximum number of listed companies. Only 2 - 3% are having actual business and rest of the companies only running on paper. They don't have any asset except few computers. In market the artificial hype is created to attract new investors. Most of the time people lose the money who float with such hype.

Investment in well established, solid fundamentals, product based companies is advisable. It is very safe and risk free investment with high return possibilities.

In 2020 market crash, I booked all your suggested stocks in very big loss. Before 2020, I have gained good profits in stocks like: Donear, SuranaSolar, DhunseriTea,TCI, InsecticideIndia, Kamdhenu, ABRFL, ADF. But I don't know, how to start now after booking big loss in 2020 crash. I think I have missed a lot in the rally. I remember in initial stage, I used to write you mail, and you replied every mail, that time reader volume was low. Even though I am your very old reader of your blog, but somehow I failed to keep my patience.

    1) Needle bearing is a very niche segment with small market size compared to overall bearing industry
    2) Cannot find any mgmt commentary on expansions/new product line/aggressive growth
    3) What is the share of its sale to parent NRB bearings? Raises issue related to manipulation in transfer pricing
    4) Risk of remaining neglected as parent may take away all focus and major pie of cake.

On analyzing the indices for NBR itself I find that they are far better than the corresponding figures for SNL. Moreover the CMP of NBR is only Rs.160 whereas that of SNL is about Rs.250.
Considering all these points , is it not better to buy NBR shares themselves rather than buy SNL, a subsidiary of NBR?

  53. Thnx for the new stock sir

Was just trying to understand bearings sector
Types of bearings and applications in %
    1. Ball bearings- 54%
    2. Tapered roller - 19%
    3. Cylindrical roller - 12%
    4. Needle roller - 9%
    5. Spherical roller - 6%

    Potential areas -
    1. Railways
    2. Dedicated freight corridor
    3. LHB
    4. Metro projects
    6. Wind power
    7. Automobile and rest is
    8. Exports
Majorly consumption / realisation- looks only improving as even if ICE is takes over by HYBRID or EV Bearings will be still used in multiple other products/ applications and realisation will improve as OEM’s will choose for even better quality !
Now on the product side I understand that the lesser the diameter easier to make and larger the diameter higher the entry barrier !
Now when the Demand is growing for tapered bearings in case of railways
    Spherical roller for wind turbines
HUB -3 bearing is also next generation model and is having higher demand
Then after sales market is quite low for needle roller bearings and what ever demand for it is left only this co is producing and that to for the parent co !
So I was trying to understand what purpose is it solving for growing demand for this industry

One more doubt I had is - machines shown in the website fungible ?
    Thanks in advance sir

NRB has bought the company to get profit and it is generating good profit since last 20 years.

SNL has paid all the debt and redemption of preference shares till 2015-16. Started sharing healthy dividend with investors since last 5 years. It is not the machines but company has team of very talented and innovative people and they are maintaining best operating profit margin in the industry since last 10 years.

    1. Dai-Ichi Q3 result is still below expectation but very near to make turnaround in next few quarters.

Raw material cost and other expenses are high. It is due to repairs and maintenance of fire affected plant. The company has not received yet insurance claim to recover losses from fire. All these issues will settle down within next few quarters.

Bonus and FV split are to increase liquidity in case stock price gone up significantly. Share capital also grow along with growth of company. Buyback is to reduce it by using surplus cash.

Stock price can rise or fall below Face Value. There is no fix rule for it because market will decide the stock price.

    My take away

Even though results are not so bad and there is bright future stock price has fallen unnecessarily just so that big investors can buy it at much lower price, retail selling in fear and few other temporary reasons bringing the price down.

Otherwise there is no other concern and it will further rise as the time passes because there is huge potential?

Am i correct? Holding foc only but want to learn.

  83. Mam,

One of your biggest advise had been not getting lured by IPOs. Implemented this in true spirit and maintained distance from fancy IPOs and also advised same to near and dear ones. Today feel vindicated and satisfying. Amazing wisdom and foresight you have Mam. Saved lots of money and mental tension. Thanks a Lot.
