Review of Investment Strategy

Dear Blog Members,

We have gone through and seen lot of changes in economy and in stock market during past 3 years. We have seen rise of Nifty / Sensex from 7000 / 23000 points to 11000 / 36000 respectively. Our portfolios for last 3 years have also given good return 308% for 2015,  126% for 2016 and 48% for 2017.

https://dolly-bestpicks.blogspot.com/2018/01/happy-new-year-2018.html

We have also seen very rough market conditions when Nifty / Sensex fell continuously for more than 1000 / 3000 points respectively, it has happened in Aug - Sept 2015,  Jan - Feb 2106, Sept - Nov 2016 and Feb -March 2018. There was no any major market correction in 2017 and due to this reason our new blog members are very nervous during recent market correction.

Up till now total 29 stocks were suggested on the blog and two stocks  had given us the opportunity to review our investment decision and future strategy. Surana Solar was due to change in government policy and Omkar Speciality Chemicals is due management issue.

I have not given open sell call for any stock because it will initiate stampede selling and it will result in continuous lower circuits. Generally I used to give very clear indication under reply to the comments so that regular blog readers can able to take the action accordingly on time with minimum or without any financial loss. In the past few months we have seen lot of readers keep on posting repeated comments without reading the past replies on Omkar Speciality and Lasa. It has created negative sentiment and stock has corrected severely. For example below comments and replies are clear enough to understand our action.

9 Feb, 2018 CMP  -  Omkar 45 and Lasa 148 = 193

12 Feb, 2018 CMP  -  Omkar 45 and Lasa 155 = 200

24 April, 2018 CMP  -  Omkar 23 and Lasa 90 = 113

It has given good learning to us and we are going with few changes in our investment strategy. It will give very clear guide line on required action on time without any confusion to our blog members. Our prime aim is to protect and minimize the  risk on our investment with fair possibility of decent gain.

Below points are basic investment guide-lines for our all blog members

1) Investment in stock market is subjected to significant risk so investors must be aware of it.  I always try to suggest the stocks with strong product base and good future growth possibilities, at the price level where chances of further correction is very less. Generally every investor expect stock price correction before buying  the stock but don't want any correction after purchase. The real fact is that no one knows the bottom of market so chance of further correction cannot be ruled out. Even though I have replied to several comments on Omkar but  we cannot expect  that every blog member will able to book the profit on time and exit on time in case of such issue. In the past we have not used stop - loss for our long investment but above situation of Omkar has given us good reason to use it to limit loss even on long-term investment.

We will use stop-loss 30% from suggested price. For example if suggested price of any stock is Rs 100 and in case if it correct below Rs 70 then need to book loss without any confusion or doubt.

2) Normal buying range will remain same + / - 10% from suggested price. For example if suggested price of any stock is Rs 100 than buy it between 110 - 90.

3) Prefer allocation 10 - 20% for each stock and book partial profit at 100% return. Keep the remaining free of cost shares for long term and reinvest principal amount again.

4) In normal condition, need to stick with investment decision for 3 years. It means that if any stock unable to give at least 100% return in 3 years than we have to sell it and reinvest it again in some other stocks. In case stock has given above 100% return than we can hold free of cost shares for further gain and reinvest principal amount again.  Now it is applicable on 2015 suggested stocks but all these stocks were able to give 100% return.

5) Our expectation from every suggested stock is 300 % in 3 - 5 years. But in case of non-performing stocks we must take action in 3 years as mentioned under point 4.

6) In any case we must be able to reinvest our principal amount again in 3 years. It is not advisable to buy any non-moving stock after 3 years even though it is trading with in buying range. It means that any stock suggestion is valid only for 3 years or it got re-suggested again with modified target.

7) If you have taken the decision to become successful investor than always be happy and never regret on any decision but learn from every right or wrong decision.

  1. Thanks again for detailed update Madam ! My portfolio is from 2017 so yes I am holding with 48% category and will wait for three years. I do understand the importance of patience with investment and now the 30% stop-loss strategy will help us further to protect the principal capital.
I have very small portfolio consists only eight of your recommendation from 2017/2018. Midcaps were corrected the most and yes as you explained shall wait and continue to read all blog members points of view which are brilliantly answered by you Madam !

    1. Up till now only two stocks Surana solar and Omkar had gone below 30% limit. We were able to detect the issue on time and blog members were informed under comments reply but some of the investor unable to take the action on time . There will not be any open sell call for any stock in the future also so to avoid such situation again we have gone for the option of stop loss at 30%

  5. Thank a lot Madam, Thanks for clarifying, while we should stick to the investment decision in general in practice I think it would make sense to change if things change. I think that would be helpful if tell us to sell if there is some change, I think that makes sense when you suggest buy the stock goes up but we also wait for a better price. Similarly if you suggest sell it could make it bad for a day or two but then we can sell when the price has normalized

    1. We will consider your suggestion to give sell call if stock price correction will not affect that much to investors.

It means that if investors are able to exit with 10 to 15% correction in stock price then it is good to give sell call but if unable to exit due to continues lower circuits and left with 10% to 15% principal amount then what is the use of giving sell call.

Have a small query on the stoploss mentioned in point #1: Say a stock was recommended at 100 and price corrected by 30% to 70. Should a new investor consider this as a good entry at 70? Or if 30% below recommended levels be considered as a call to avoid this stock forever? Kindly please help clarify.

Sintex seems to be a good stock (and am convinced about its future growth potential) but in the short term it looks it might go to 40 levels (recommended at 60). Was planning to add more (to average) if it touches 40 levels. So, your latest views on Sintex will help in decision making. Kindly please do consider clarifying this.

But say for example, after a year of recommendation or within the year span the stock gone to to 100%. But for next two years it has legs to go for another 200%-300%. So considering this, can one buy that particular script. May be by time will have your new stocks in the buying range, but my question was specifically to the scenario I am talking. Kindly answer my question to clear my confusion.

  46. Nilesh shah- MD - Kotak AMC on the Indian economy:

I will take liberty to point out certain factors. a) The movie Baaghi 2 had a bigger opening collection than Bahubali 2 which was a far grander movie. It shows that urban consumption is growing at a reasonable pace. Sonali Contractor sold 100,000 tractors last year. Mahindra & Mahindra, Escorts are also showing all-time high levels of tractor sales. Clearly, that shows that rural economy is doing well.

Maruti Baleno has a four months’ waiting period. If consumers do not have money, then how come they are waiting for four months to get the car? Tata Motors’ commercial vehicle production is at an all-time high record level. Generally commercial vehicles are pulse of the market, pulse of the economy. If commercial vehicle sales are happening, certainly economy is rebounding.

Cement volume are showing double digit growth. The cement numbers for this quarter has come ahead of expectation. If we see a variety of other FMCG companies like Dabur, Lever and ITC, their commentary is also positive in terms of rural FMCG growth.

Put all these numbers together and you realise that the economy seems to have now rebounded, the momentum is picking up, it is reflected in last four months of IIP numbers which was above 7%. It is reflected in GST collections which have crossed Rs 1 lakh crore for the first time.

This 30% stop loss is for impatient investors. e.g. i bought nitin spinner at 121 and it correctecd 27% apx due to a sudden mkt correction. But y should i sell it foolishly when i know future growth potential is intact nd i bought for 3 years nd not 3 months. Yes, the only fear i have is, if all the suggested stock will not perform in 3 years then only i will regret my decision ( and i think that ll be a rare thing ). Otherwise i will never regret the decision of investing .1-2 stock in a portfolio not performing is not a big deal if rest performs as per expectations. Company has closed loss making US subsidiary and plant shifted to India , net debt reduction and restructuring of short term debt with long term debt with funding from KKR. We can expect very positive results in coming quarters.

Now no option left, price corrected near 50%, you can continue to hold as it is and exit with some profit in future.

    1. Generally buy back offer is to reward the existing shareholders of the company and offer price is higher than market price. Offer price depend upon availability of free cash reserve and size of buy back offer. So there is no any relation with fair value of the company

Jubilant industry has posted negative result but it is very close to start posting positive results in coming quarters.

You can continue to hold both stocks as it is for decent gain in future. If current allocation is below 10% then both can add more on cmp or little bit on further correction.

  100. Hi mam,

When you say in line with expectations, is it debt reduction? 15-20% increase in revenue? reduction in working capital? etc etc.. and even when the you are talking about negative result, you are hopeful that it will post positive result, could you please tell what do you look when you read the results? And is it when you talk to the management they will tell you about future growth and expectations and then when you look at results if it is meeting what they told and you decide if it is on track or off track? Please let us know how to read the results or what you look while analyzing.

Thank you for all the support.

    1. Our expectation is in line with market expectation and it may be positive or negative. For example of Sintex plastic, management has given guidelines in the last year September that year result of FY 2017 - 18 will remain flat due to reduction in prefab revenue, restructuring of debt, restructuring of operation with focus on consumer and customer molding business so we are also expecting muted result from Sintex plastic in the Q4 but we can expect much better result in coming quarters because result of these efforts will start appearing in profitability of the company

  102. Dear Mrs Dolly,
This is regarding sharp fall in Rain today. Although the results were good but I believe the news regarding a new technology being developed by Alcoa in partnership with others for Aluminium production seems to have spooked the market. However as per the developers this technology is likely to be commercialised by 2024 only. So I believe there is no change in Rains positive story for at least the next few years.

M'am would you kindly share your views regarding Rain.

M'am lots of investors like Nikhil Vora, his private equity fund Sixth sense and now some mutual fund houses have started investing in micro caps even before the ipo is listed and some especially Nikhil Vora have done very well. Although this strategy can be very risky as not much information is available regarding these companies as also liquidity is a big issue here but I am sure marquee investors like you can get this information and evaluate these companies.

M'am would you like to look at some such promising companies and give your views regarding them with a strict warning to the blog followers that these are just emerging stories and so are very risky and only investors who can take the risk and stay invested for a very long term should look at them. You could write about them on the blog as just information and not a recommendation unlike the regular stocks.

M'am some such stocks like payTM , Hindustan foods, just svendgaard etc where investors picked up these stocks even before listing have done extremely well. But then for every micro stock which has done well more number of these have failed too.

M'am if you can find time then please study some of these sme stocks which you find interesting and just put them up as information on the blog.

    Will be extremely grateful.

    Thanks and warm regards,

    Navraj Grewal

    1. Yes you are right, there are some technological developments are going on which can replace several conventional products and process in future. There is some oversupply of pet coke from China but today’s stock price correction is not related with any these news but it is happened because BNP Paribas has sold around 2 million shares @ 277. You can continue to hold it the price will stabilise within few days.

We will consider your suggestion on SME stocks
